According to early previews from IGN, the new mechanics allow Styx to:

2. A Massive, Interconnected World
Unlike the mission-based structure of Shards of Darkness, Blades of Greed adopts a semi-open world structure. The developers have cited the "Metroidvania" genre as a huge inspiration.
